Real-life Budget activity

Created by
Jamie Lukey
This activity will be a guided class activity in which students choose their career from a list of careers and median salaries. The students will then use websites and given information to determine their school loan payments, buy a house, determine their mortgage, utilities, car payment, insurance and groceries/living expenses. The students will be able to complete a budget sheet and then a short 4 question reflection sheet from the activity. My students did this at the end of 8th grade math

Responsibility: visual activity and role plays

Responsibility is an important value. Instilling this value in students is necessary for time management, intrinsic motivation, prioritization, and good work ethic. This is my favorite activity to do with students. You'll need a clear jar or vase, small pebbles, and large rocks, along with this lesson plan. The visual is very impactful. The role play activities the students create afterwards will reinforce their ability to apply the new information.

Economics: Market Day Fundraiser

Economics is such a difficult concept to teach. Charity is, too. Neither one has to be. Put children at work selling what they know. Whether it's providing a service, or making a bracelet, an origami or an airplane, students become validated when their talents and treasures are coveted by others. An extension to this, however, is using their talents to help others. So if there is a natural disaster, or a need of some sort, or a charity which can benefit, have students put economics to use, as

Virtual Trip to Disneyland and Quiz / scavenger hunt

This is something you can do with kids at home or with students in a class. There are 8 links to videos of popular Disneyland rides. After each ride there will be a set of questions that kids have to answer (regarding the ride they just went on). It would work well over zoom if you were needing something light and fun for your class or youth group. There is a link to the Disneyland fireworks display at the end of the acitivity.

Motivational thinking lesson for students taking exams

Each year, students take standardized exams. Some are statewide and some are nationwide but they all cause students to have anxiety. This lesson teaches children and teens what adults know about overcoming stress. It can lead to a daily dose of meditation or mindful reflection, depending on your style as an educator. In addition, doing a mindful meditation right after lunch will help the entire class calm down and refocus.

STRATEGIES FOR GLOBAL STUDIES - WORLD HISTORY CLASS DISCUSSIONS

I'm a recently retired, award winning, HS Global Studies teacher, and currently I teach, part - time, in the Education Department of Salve Regina University, and in the Political Science Dept. at the University of Rhode Island. (See my profile.) If you polled my ex-students, and my current students, as to what they liked best about my classes, the most common response you would hear would be "the class discussions." It took me a while to get good at it, and now it seems like child's play, but i

Student Survival: How to be a Successful Student

This activity is a terrific way to teach students about their responsibilities and how to be a successful student at school without having to lecture. It allows them to move, run, and hunt for the "skills" needed in order for them to survive in your class. They will not only enjoy being able to take a break from the paperwork and policies of the first week, but will also be learning your expectations for them as students in an engaging way. Students will go on a scavenger hunt outside or in
