Designing a Roller Coaster using the Law of Conservation of Energy

In this great hands on activity students will need to follow the Law of Conservation of Energy to create blueprints to their own roller coaster. The students will need to calculate the over all mass, height, PE and KE of their roller coaster at various spots long it's path while keeping in mind their linear blueprints must be to scale, in color and very accurate. This document has everything you need to help your students master these skills. All you need to do is help your students bring the

Newtons Laws of Motion Project - Middle School Science

Created by
MS Science Spot
This is a great way to wrap up an unit on Newton's 3 Laws of Motion. Students choose how they want to present their information for the project. It can be a poster, brochure or power point presentation. If students come up with a different presentation as long as they get my approval beforehand, I usually give them the go ahead (ie: students wanted to include videos versus pictures in their PPT presentation). This project includes some background information on the 3 laws of motion for student

Let's Go Fly a Kite Engineering Project

Created by
Bill Young
Students design, build and test a kite over a 3 day period. This is followed by another 3 day period for redesign and additional testing. Project encourages students to share ideas and to use effective engineering skills in an effort to meet the minimum requirement; 30 seconds of flight time with no assistance from the student; i.e. pulling on the string. Downloadable file is a Word Document that can be edited to fit the needs and timeline of your classroom.

Marble Roller Coaster Activity

Created by
CLSTeach
Building and designing a marble roller coaster. This is a great activity for motion and forces for middle and high school students. Students use foam pipe insulation to design a roller coaster with hills, a loop and a curve. Students must problem solve to overcome the forces of gravity and centripetal forces to get a marble to the end of the track. Students also measure and calculate speed and acceleration at different points within the roller coaster.

Motion & Forces Bloom Ball Project

Created by
Mark Brown
This is a week-long project in which students create a Bloom Ball (12-sided figure) about motion & forces. Each side of the Bloom Ball focuses on a different aspect of motion & forces (i.e. Newton's Laws, gravity, potential & kinetic energy, etc.). This is a great project if you're looking to assess students' learning, as it asks them to define key terms and draw their own examples of the various concepts related to motion & forces. Excellent classroom decoration once they're fin
