I use clothespins with my students' names and move their clothespin as I take "Status of the Class" during Writer's Workshop. My students love the the image of Mickey Mouse as he evolves through Walt Disney's drafts.

Kid Writing Crowns Mini Cheat Sheet
Kid Writing advocates the use of "Kid Crowns" (visual aids to help children remember sight words, spelling patterns, consonant blends, digraphs, etc.), but I found actual crowns are disruptive and time consuming. I hang large posters in my room as each crown is introduced. This mini version lists common crowns on 1 small page (1/3 of an 8 1/2" x 10" piece of printer paper). It can be placed in students' writing folders.

Dead Word list for High School Writers
Use this list with you students - break bad habits in writing! Five Star Writing Rubric
This simple poster helps younger students remember the key writing mechanics when creating a paragraph. I made the poster small and placed it on each child's desk. Before they could hand in their paragraph, they had to make sure that they followed the 5 star writing rules. They loved having me check it and drawing how many stars they earned. Over time, it encouraged them to self edit their writing to ensure the five stars!
