Kid Writing advocates the use of "Kid Crowns" (visual aids to help children remember sight words, spelling patterns, consonant blends, digraphs, etc.), but I found actual crowns are disruptive and time consuming. I hang large posters in my room as each crown is introduced. This mini version lists common crowns on 1 small page (1/3 of an 8 1/2" x 10" piece of printer paper). It can be placed in students' writing folders. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-N

Before they could hand in their paragraph, they had to make sure that they followed the 5 star writing rules. They loved having me check it and drawing how many stars they earned. Over time, it encouraged them to self edit their writing to ensure the five stars!
