Journal Writing Rubric
This rubric is well-suited to middle school journal writing exercises. The rubric was originally designed for a students' collections of their five best journal entries during a novel study, but can be edited to suit your needs. It includes the requirements of having an effective topic sentence, organization, comprehension, spelling and punctuation, and meeting the requirements of the assignment on a scale of one to four.

Having students create their own world is a great way to encourage creativity as well as consider many different aspects of our society. This is a very high-interest writing assignment for students as it gives kids the ability to make up their own rules! This would be a great project to incorporate with a social studies class as well. This project can be easily adapted for students of different abilities- I have done this with all abilities of students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.

Biography Essay Rubric
A simple essay rubric that I use for biographies.In my school my students can sometimes be absent for longer periods of time, so I generally assign them mini-research projects/essays where I can be a little bit more indirect with the learning and not teach from a textbook. That being said, this rubric often can be used for English as well as History.
