This is a meal planning guide that incorporates the 5 basic food groups. Students will use a cookbook to decide on the main course of the meal, and from there will add on side dishes to help balance the food groups presented in the meal. This unit was used with high school seniors to facilitate three Writing to Evaluate tasks. Students work in teams to plan, bake, decorate, and evaluate cupcakes. My classes had access to the school Home and Careers kitchens, which allowed for us to complete the entire process. The students practiced teamwork and reflected on each step of the process. They loved it!
