Backyard Project - Perimeter, Area, and Volume - Real World Applications

This project is the culmination of the perimeter, area, volume unit. It can be used as a task for the Common Core, or real world application of the measurement unit. Students estimate the cost to build a backyard, with a swimming pool, deck, shed, playset area, garden, and brick walkway. Using the calculations and costs associated with purchasing materials needed to construct the different parts, students will generate the total cost of the project, without labor. With the dimensions provide

Eric Rude
This forensic science lab gives students an opportunity to learn how to find the source of blood spatters. Using a set of spatters of known size, the students will measure the width and length of each spatter, calculate the sine and then determine the angle of impact. They will use strings, raised to those angles, to find the point of convergence, which indicates where the source of blood was located. This includes photos of the setup, the blood spatters themselves, student instructions and da

STEM Boot Camp
A lot of the time, it's difficult to incorporate hands-on activities into math classes. This lab provides a great way for middle school students to apply their knowledge of unit conversions to a real-world application: house square footage and floor plans. First, students will find the dimensions of each room in their house using only their feet. Then, they will convert their measurements into actual feet. They will use this information to find the area of each room and create a floor plan using

This twist on the traditional Balsa Wood Suspension Bridge, is a long-term project for either an individual or a team to complete. It successfully meets half the standards of a semester of Geometry and Physics. From researching the methods of building a bridge and the physics of wave resonance and frequencies, students design and develop their own suspension bridges, made primarily of balsa wood, to hold (by dangling) as large amount of weight as possible.

Hands-On Right Triangle Trigonometry

After teaching students the lesson on right triangle Trigonometry, I take my students outside for this activity which is finding the height of the school flagpole by using right triangle trigonometry. My students make the Clinometers out of protractors, straws, string, and washers, then use them to find the angle of elevation from their line of sight to the top of the flagpole. This is a great hands on lesson that helps students understand what they are actually calculating in class!
