Miracle Year Projects Bundle: Einstein's Miracle Year Discoveries

Albert Einstein, one of the most brilliant scientists of our time, produced four amazingly creative and groundbreaking discoveries in articles published during his famous Miracle Year of 1905. These articles included four important topics: light’s wave-particle duality, atomic existence, special relativity, and the mass-energy relationship, E = mc^2.This bundle includes four investigations into these four groundbreaking topics (one each). To help students organize their observations and ideas,

"Apparently, yesterday after school, someone was in our class looking for something. This person did not have permission, but I’m pretty sure they were looking for my secret stash of Mr. Goodbars. The only people who might have a key are other teachers, principals, and custodians. They were not very smart because they left muddy shoeprints. You will be using the shoeprint and our faculty footprint database to determine the most likely suspects."NOTE: I used this lesson with 7th and 8th graders b

Crime Scenario:“Out in the country, it is not uncommon to hear gunfire and ‘tings’ from kids shooting at targets. But today, the gunfire seemed quite close, so close that it wasn’t ‘tings’ that Mr. Walker heard but ‘whomps’ that were hitting his chicken coop! Feathers were flying and the chickens were scattering like crazy. Once Mr. Walker corralled all the chickens and they calmed down, he called the police to file a complaint even though no chickens were harmed. The police collected 8 bullets

For 250 students, I generally use up: 20 g Fe, three 12"x12" sheets of Al foil, 12" of Mg ribbon, 20g Zn powder, and 200 ml of 1M CuSO4 solution. Equipment: large test tubes, 0.001 accuracy balance, long glass thermometer, small beaker, graduated cylinder, timer (or let them use cell phones) Concepts covered:

Bacterial and Viral Replication Lab

This lab requires you to have raw beans (any kind to model bacteria) and whiteboards for students to draw a family tree and write out generation numbers next to each bacterial generation. (You could also do this on paper.)This lab is a great way for students to simulate bacterial and viral reproduction. For the bacteria, students will model the number of bacteria in each generation starting with only one bacterium (represented by a bean). With each generation, students will watch as the family t
