Measuring Matter (mass, volume, and density)

Created by
Lori Stidham
This lesson is a fun way to help your students explore the mass, volume, and density of everyday objects. It teaches them all about measuring matter and then allows them to practice what they have learned through hands-on labs and word problem worksheets. It is primarily targeted for the 5-7 grade classroom. This lesson includes: 1. “Measuring Matter”PowerPoint with student handout 2. “Measuring Matter: Your Turn” (follows the ppt and lets students practice finding mass, volume, and density) 3

STEM Boot Camp
In this fun and festive activity, your students will use their knowledge of density, proportions, and unit conversions to make Christmas cookies without access to the appropriate measuring cups and spoons. Teams will work together in the chemistry lab to come up with ways to measure the correct quantity of each ingredient in the recipe. Then, after all of the cookies are baked and decorated, the students will get to taste them to see how well they turned out! This activity is meant for middle

This lab will get your students up and moving! And guess what? It's a MATH lab. That's right --I'm combining exercise and math over here :-) The target level for this lab is algebra 1 (typically 8th or 9th graders), but some advanced pre-algebra students will be able to handle it as well. Students should have a very basic understanding of systems of linear equations and percent error calculations before jumping into this activity. The hands-on portion of this lab is written to be conducted o

This is a multiple concepts lab that has a lot of 'wow' factor for students as metals disappear and new ones appear. It is in miniscale so you that don't use that much of your chemicals. For 250 students, I generally use up: 20 g Fe, three 12"x12" sheets of Al foil, 12" of Mg ribbon, 20g Zn powder, and 200 ml of 1M CuSO4 solution. Equipment: large test tubes, 0.001 accuracy balance, long glass thermometer, small beaker, graduated cylinder, timer (or let them use cell phones) Concepts covered:

This is a full unit, includes review sheets on Molarity and molality designed for homebound students (easily self directed), a lab experiment with an alternate assignment, and 4 versions of a summative quiz. This Unit is designed to fall AFTER Stoichiometry, Nomenclature, types of chemical reactions and oxidation states. It allows for review of all of those concepts. Answer keys are all included. The lab experiment requires: distilled water, soda ash, calcium chloride, test tubes, test tube ra

Students visit 8 stations to explore different properties of density

Students will visit 8 stations to explore different properties of density. This comes between metric measurement and the density laboratory investigation. May take 2-3 days to complete. Skills needed to be successful on the lab are fostered in this exploration. The stations include: Determine the Density of Clay Determine the Density of Quartz Determine the Density of Water Determine the Range in a Data Set Determine the Change in Density Due to Thermal Expansion Calculating the Volume of a Sph

Middle School Math Workshop: Red and White Pattern Exploration

Are you using workshop-style lessons in your middle school math classroom? If you're not you should: they are easy to prep for, allow for differentiated learning, and instant assessment. If we want our students to actually learn the facts, concepts, and ideas we’re trying to teach them, they have to experience those things in some way that rises above abstract symbols on paper. They have to process them. Manipulate them.To really learn in a way that will stick, they have to DO something. Worksho
