Description

In this fun and festive activity, your students will use their knowledge of density, proportions, and unit conversions to make Christmas cookies without access to the appropriate measuring cups and spoons. Teams will work together in the chemistry lab to come up with ways to measure the correct quantity of each ingredient in the recipe. Then, after all of the cookies are baked and decorated, the students will get to taste them to see how well they turned out!

This activity is meant for middle school students. It requires prior knowledge of unit conversion methods and the ability to perform density calculations. It is also great for homeschooled students who have easy access to an oven!

The package includes:
1. A concept review of density, proportions and unit conversions.
2. A pre-activity practice worksheet that allows students to apply their knowledge to problems similar to those that they will encounter during the activity.
3. A materials list and a step-by-step procedure.
4. Data sheets for students to record information and perform calculations as they complete the lab.
5. A "Results and Discussion" section that will allow students to reflect on the activity and identify possible sources of error.
6. "Standards Alignment" pages that highlight the NGSS and ITEEA standards that apply to the activity.
7. An answer key that contains a sample completed lab.
8. A font agreement from Kevin Richey, creator of the "mostly mono" font used in the documents.

Enjoy my Christmas cookie activity and please keep my store in mind for other hands-on STEM challenges!
