Math Poems To Practice Multiplication Facts

Created by

These poems can be used with students in grades K-8 to highlight and enhance learning on a variety of math topics. I believe that children learn best through various modes of learning. These poems will be great to use as an overview for what you will be studying or as a review of previously learned concepts. Poems can be chanted or sung. I have tried to create poems that can be sung to almost any children's song. You don't have to be musical to use these songs! Just willing to look at math in

Canción de redondear

As a Dual Language teacher, I often find that resources in Spanish are limited. I went to a presentation where the speakers had written a song that accompanies a rounding game. This was a great song, however, it was written in English. I asked for permission to translate this song, so here it is! The students learn the process of rounding while having fun!

Doubles Song / Doubling Rhyme / Multiplication / Two Times Table

I wrote this rhyme to help second and third-graders memorize their doubles facts. While they often could double 1-5 with ease, they tended to get mixed up with the products of 6, 7, 8 and 9 when multiplied by two. After "singing" this enough times, I could hear my students whispering the lines to themselves when doing computations! Eventually, as with anything that we memorize, they needed to refer to the rhyme less and less, and eventually it was committed to memory. I recommend writing it out

Restas de dos dígitos

As a Dual Language teacher, I often find that Spanish resources are limited. I wrote this song to teach students how to subtract two-digit numbers with borrowing. Not only does this song teach the steps, but it also explains why there is one less ten and ten more ones. The students learn the concepts while having fun!

Sumas de dos dígitos con llevar

I am probably most proud of this song that I have created. It provides clear instructions in Spanish in order to solve a double-digit addition problem. As a Dual Language teacher, I find that Spanish resources can be limited, so I wrote this song. The first few times we sing it, I visually tie the steps with an actual addition problem. The students not only remember the steps, but they have fun learning!

Double-Digit Subtraction Chant with Movements

This lesson gives the students the opportunity to chant and move. Students will learn a chant that helps them identify when to subtract and when to borrow before subtracting. Students will also learn a second chant that leads them through the process of borrowing. Both chants have movements to go along with the words. These movements are included in the lesson plan. This is great as an introduction for 1st and 2nd grade or a review for 3rd grade.
