Cost vs. Benefits of a Hybrid Car
I used this to help explain cost vs benefits for the environmental issues portion of 6th grade science. Students will research the cost of a hybrid car and it's gasoline model using the Internet. They will then calculate the cost of gas for each car over a 5 year period of time. The students will then see if the cost of a hybrid car is worth the larger sticker price. This is a very basic traveling project. The students are required to use a map of Southeastern Pennsylvania and answer questions regarding:

This is a project that lasts as long as you want it to... I usually give my students a good 2 weeks of math period time (or extra time) to complete their business idea. This does also require a teacher or someone to "shop" at their businesses when they are ready. Then, on the last day, students get to "shop" at each others' businesses. Renting a Car Performance Task - Proportionality
This performance tasks requires students to research different car rentals and compare them based on miles per gallon using their knowledge of unit rates. They will then create a table and graph based on the research found to determine the slope and proportionality for each car. Lastly, students will need to compare two different graphs given to determine which has the better miles per gallon and explain using vocabulary such as constant rate of change, slope and direct variation.
