Range of motion (ROM) lab for healthcare science students. This lab has 2 components that can be used together or seperate. The first section is for active range of motion measurements using a goniometer. The chart is divided by joint. Each joint has a picture depicting patient placement along with goniometer placement. The students will measure the joint ROM and write down the measurement accordingly. The second section is a checklist of a majority of movements for each joint. Students will simp

Chemical Bonding: Soap Making Lab

Created by
Noel Rods
This lab is part of the Chemical Bonding unit that uses the chemistry of soap to introduce the social justice question: "Should soap be considered a basic human right?" Students can use this lab to make soap and sell them to raise money for a charity, or students can make the soap to give away to a shelter in need. This is an excellent way to make chemistry relevant, relatable and culturally responsive.

Lung Capacity/Respiratory Lab

This lab activity explores the lung capacities of students and encourages them to hypothesize why lung capacity is different among their peers. All you need for this lab are some balloons, rulers, a calculator, and this handout! Students will measure tidal volume and expiratory volume, and investigate the relationships between these measurements. This is an engaging lab that can be completed in a health course, anatomy and physiology, or a life sciences course. Enjoy!

Heart Rate Investigation - Fitness in Health and Physical Activity

Created by
Stephanie P
This investigation allows students to measure their heart rates after different physical activities. It will allow them to see that the more vigorous the activity, they higher their heart rate will climb. It also allows areas for reflection and can be used for further learning throughout the year. This is a great activity to begin a fitness unit or to even start at the beginning of the year. A great cross curricular approach as well, incorporating math and the need for addition and multipli

Intermolecular Forces and Soap: Kinetic Sand Lab and CER

Created by
Noel Rods
Conduct a lab with students where they can see the polar and nonpolar interactions between kinetic sand, water and ethanol. Students will use their observations as evidence to explain how effective soap is at killing covid virus on hands. Use this activity as part of the chemical bonding unit that includes the social justice question: "should soap be considered a basic human right?" to make your classroom learning relevant, relatable and culturally responsive.

Andrea Taktak
I created this lab activity for students to learn about the parts of a vertebra as well as to see differences between the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar bones. For this lab, you should have 4 or more articulated skeletons for students to be able to group around and make observations. You will also need dis-articulated vertebrae so that you can group students into 2-4 and issue them one of each type of vertebrae to make notes and measurements. This is simply an introduction to the verteb

Measuring Student VO2 Max - Lab Class

Have your students break a sweat and get active and out of the classroom setting! The primary objective of this laboratory is to provide students with a practical and immersive experience in measuring VO2 max, a pivotal marker of cardiovascular fitness. By engaging in hands-on activities and data analysis, students will gain a deeper understanding of how their bodies respond to exercise intensity and how these responses reflect their overall aerobic capacity. Through this exploration, students w
Preview of Skull Bones and Landmarks

Skull Bones and Landmarks

This labeling packet covers in detail the bones of the skull and major landmarks. There are 5 different views of the skull and a fetal skull page. I use this as a way to have students gain practice in learning bones and landmarks. I feel learning is maximized if students have a real skull model to look at while the teacher points out structures on the diagram for students to color/label. Students are then learning kinesthetically by touching model, labeling, and coloring. Retention is awesome!

This fun and low-cost, limited-prep, lab allows students to explore the influences on their sense of taste and its relationship to smell. I use this lab in my high school anatomy class as a part of our special senses topic coverage, but it could be adapted to all levels.Available in word format to allow for editing as needed. Teacher guide with prep and implementation suggestions also included.

Use this inquiry activity to introduce chemical bonding to students. You can bring this activity later in the unit when discussing the differences between intermolecular forces. Make this lab go further by bringing in social justice discussion with the following driving question: should soap be considered a basic human right? (the handout for the discussion is available in my store)

Anatomical Terms Banana Sectioning Lab

In this lab, students pretend to be surgeons working on Mrs. Anna Banana. First students draw on the banana skin, some identifiable location markers, like an X in both of her orbital regions. As they cut into her, they are guided by instructions using anatomical language, like "make a midsagittal cut in her abdominal region, 2 cm in length". Materials needed: Bananas, plastic knives, paper plates, rulers, and sharpies. Document is 2 pages and editable in Microsoft word. This takes 1 class period

Cellular Respiration Tennis Ball Lab (Anaerobic Respiration)

This lab requires students to squeeze a tennis ball with each hand for 60 seconds while their partner records the number of squeezes using 10 second intervals. During this procedure, students will experience anaerobic respiration via a burning sensation in their forearm muscle cells. Following the procedure, students answer post-lab questions (including a CER) and complete a line graph comparing their hands.* You will need a class set of tennis balls for this lab. It generally works better if yo

The Dreaded Red Disease Lab!

Sodium Hydroxide and Phenolphthalein go a long way to demonstrate the spread of communicable disease! This is an AWESOME visual demo to do with your class! It ensures that EVERY student gets involved and forces students to get up and out of their seats as they exchange "bodily fluids." After each student has exchanged three times, you will test their cups with the Phenolphthalein. The cups that turn PINK will indicate that they have been infected with Dreaded Red Disease. Student directions are
