Virtual Urinalysis Lab

This is a step by step instruction worksheet that accompanies the Human Bio Media virtual urinalysis lab. I created it to help my students progress through the hands on lab. It can replace a more costly lab that uses artificial urine, urine strips, etc. It can be used as a pre lab to an actual wet lab, or it can be used for distance learning. Your students will enjoy pouring urine into a jug to measure its volume. Analyzing the color, clarity, and smell of the urine as well as using a test

Testing the Cranial Nerves Lab

Created by
Andrea Taktak
This is a fun way for students to test their own cranial nerves (some include a partner needed for help). I used lemon extract and mint extract (a few drops on a cotton ball in a small container) for my two smells. I used corn syrup and sterile swabs for the "sweet" taste and cocoa powder and sterile swabs for the "bitter" taste. I added the corn syrup and the cocoa powder myself into Dixie cups to limit contamination for each student.

This investigation allows students to measure their heart rates after different physical activities. It will allow them to see that the more vigorous the activity, they higher their heart rate will climb. It also allows areas for reflection and can be used for further learning throughout the year. This is a great activity to begin a fitness unit or to even start at the beginning of the year. A great cross curricular approach as well, incorporating math and the need for addition and multipli

Inspiration Vital Capacity Using an Incentive Spirometer

This is a hands-on lab that measures student lung volume. It tends to make students aware of how much their lungs are affected by vaping, smoking, second hand smoking, etc. I have had students weep when they realize their lung volume is merely 500 cc when it should be 2500-3000 cc. It uses an incentive spirometer that can be purchased online with coin filler paper wraps as makeshift mouth pieces.
