Some of the best group discussions I have ever seen came out of this assignment, which asks students to "serve" on a Vietnam-era draft board to determine who goes and who stays from 10 short, realistic bios, and defend their decisions. Students get worked up and passionate! It really helps bring the tension and frustration of a draft (and allowing exceptions to the draft) to life.

Robber Barons / Captains of Industry Tactics: How to Form a Monopoly
Students explore how men such as Rockefeller and Carnegie formed monopolies during the Gilded Age. I found that students lacked a true understanding of the institutionalized racism and social/political/economic challenges African Americans faced in the 100 years between the end of slavery and the first breakthroughs of the Civil Rights Movement. To provide more context, I created this assignment explaining sharecropping, the KKK, Jim Crow Laws, Poll Taxes, Literacy Tests, and Grandfather Clauses. It is very informative and great for class discussion afterwards and linking to modern times.
