Geometry Project - Geometry Town

Created by
Judy and Brett
Students will create a town map made of different geometric figures. They will demonstrate their knowledge of parallel and perpendicular lines, acute and obtuse angles, geometric shapes as well as many other geometric concepts through this creative and fun project. This project can be adapted to higher level geometry courses and high school classes. You can add parameters to the geometric shaped buildings (ex. must label the dimensions of the building given a certain area or perimeter).

This project integrates the arts with symmetry and congruent shapes in a rigorous and relevant way. This can be done as a homework project or in class. There are 2 versions included (I updated the original to be more Common Core focused). The task includes artistic practice with line of symmetry, parallel lines, perpendicular lines and real life examples of symmetry. This works well with 3rd-5th graders.

Measuring Angles is EEEasy!

A quick mnemonic for measuring angles with a protractor - Extend the rays, Estimate the answer (above or below 90 degrees) and now it's Easy to determine which number on the protractor to choose. Common Core Math standards require students to know and measure angles - but it is always confusing on how to do it easily and how to pick between the two numbers on the protractor. This can be used as a page in a math journal or projected to use as an anchor chart. Could also be sent home for parent

For this assignment, students will create their own zoo finding the area and perimeter of each animal's exhibit. WAY more fun than a boring old worksheet or test. PLUS, it is standards based, and it covers much, much more than area and perimeter of squares, rectangles, and rectangular shapes. This assignment reinforces skills such as basic fact recall, multiplication of larger numbers, using a ruler, and measuring in centimeters.

This photograph of a disorganized kitchen is accompanied by a list of math concepts that can be found in the picture, such as capacity and three dimensional shapes. This is great for posting in the hallway where students wait for the restroom or in the cafeteria where students wait in line each day. Every time they view it, they will see something different, and the list of suggested concepts gives them things to find in an "I Spy" manner. Also good for posting on the board for students to circ
