Geometry Project - Geometry Town

Created by
Judy and Brett
Students will create a town map made of different geometric figures. They will demonstrate their knowledge of parallel and perpendicular lines, acute and obtuse angles, geometric shapes as well as many other geometric concepts through this creative and fun project. This project can be adapted to higher level geometry courses and high school classes. You can add parameters to the geometric shaped buildings (ex. must label the dimensions of the building given a certain area or perimeter).

Da Vinci Parachute Prototypes -- Hands-on STEM

In this lesson, students solve geometry problems and learn background physics concepts as they build a working model of Leonardo Da Vinci’s parachute. Logic, critical thinking, a bit of Renaissance history, writing and supporting conclusions with details from a source—it’s all here too! Make this extended lesson a cross-curricular, standards-based mini-unit, or just make it a cool building activity. Pick and choose the level of commitment right for you and your students. Students will bring in a box (and cylinder) from home and use it to find surface area (using 2 different methods), volume and to create a net. Students will also review measurement and use appropriate units (squared and cubed). This project will enable the students to actually understand the surface area formula. (instead of just plugging numbers into a formula) They will not only use the formula, but also calculate the area of each of the individual 6 faces of a rectangular solid (and parts o

Friday Math -- Baseball Card Probability Game

This series of activities will challenge students’ Common Core skills and critical thinking skills in a variety of ways! How do baseball video game developers design their video games so that Major League players perform with relative accuracy according to their real-life strengths and weaknesses? They begin with statistics and probability. In this series of activities, students will apply probability (expressed as fractions and dice rolls) in order to design a baseball card which will be use

Design Your Own Cereal Box Using Area, Surface Area, and Volume

Created by
Math with Miss B
This project can be used when teaching Surface Area and Volume in grades 5-7. Students will design their own cereal brand and box. Students will label their cereal box and it’s dimensions. Then, students will find the volume of the cereal box. Students will create a surface area net or use the one provided to find the area of each face and then the total surface area of the cereal box. Just like any other cereal box, the front should be decorated to attract customers and students w

Compass Animals

Created by
Amber Frank
Students can choose between 6 different animals to construct completely out of circles. By constructing their animals they are practicing measuring with a ruler (using both metric and English measurements) and using a compass. This is also great review for circle vocabulary such as radius and diameter. This activity includes the instructions for a bear, panda, turtle, pig, frog, and lady bug. Each animal has the dimensions for all body parts.

This is a good project to bring in real life models to review geometry as well as measurement for perimeter and area. I use this closer to the end of the year and give students multiple weeks to finish assignment. You can also modify this by changing some of the requirements for special education students as well as add more challenging skills required for those higher students.

This is a project to use after teaching area and perimeter. It is aligned to Common Core 6th Grade Standards: 6.EE.A.2 and 6.G.A.1. Students find the area of a triangles, rectangles, squares, parallelograms, and trapezoids using formulas. Then students are able to creatively put them together to create a figure or design. They can then compare the area and perimeter of the whole constructed shape compared to that of each individual one. This should only take one class period to complete.
