My students absolutely love this. I use it in their writer's notebook but it can be done as a stand alone activity. What I call "cue cards," is a set of setting, conflict and character cards. Students draw one of each, often that do not match which makes for higher order thinking and more fun, and must write a story in that setting with that conflict and character.
