Leaving a Tip
Students will visit 12 restaurant stations where they are given the total bill and the type of service they received. From this information, they will decide which category of tipping to use in order to figure out the tip and total amount they owe. Students can solve through applying percent of a number, decimal multiplication, or proportions.

I use this number line task to introduce the Rational Numbers unit for grade 7 (7.NS). The task allows for independent, partner, small group, and/or whole class discussion. This activity is intended to lead into a discussion of positive and negative numbers, integers, absolute value, opposites, distances on a number line, and adding and subtracting rational numbers.
