Cost vs. Benefits of a Hybrid Car
I used this to help explain cost vs benefits for the environmental issues portion of 6th grade science. Students will research the cost of a hybrid car and it's gasoline model using the Internet. They will then calculate the cost of gas for each car over a 5 year period of time. The students will then see if the cost of a hybrid car is worth the larger sticker price. This correlates with VA sol 6.9d.

Business Savvy with Decimals
This is a project that lasts as long as you want it to... I usually give my students a good 2 weeks of math period time (or extra time) to complete their business idea. This does also require a teacher or someone to "shop" at their businesses when they are ready. Then, on the last day, students get to "shop" at each others' businesses. Every year this has been a huge success. Have fun!!!

A great FREE extension for your students to complete after they do the "Hands-on Fraction, Decimal, and Percent Activity" (which focuses on trying to break a world record and seeing how you compared statistically).
Students who really enjoyed the Guinness World Record math activity can take things further by researching another Guinness World Record, planning out how the class could attempt it, and figuring out a way to tie it into math.
