Exploring Point of View Through Poetry: "One Inch Tall" by Shel Silverstein
Student read and discuss the poem "One Inch Tall" by Shel Silverstein, noting the rhyme scheme, paraphrasing each stanza, and analyzing the speaker, their perspective, and ideas conveyed.
Then, students will write an original poem from the perspective of someone who is 15 Ft tall. they will use the planning sheets, the structure of Silverstein's poem, and a teacher model to create an original poem.

The first year I taught Night by Elie Wiesel, I was struck by the sense of "unfinished-ness" my students felt upon completion of the text. They said they felt like there should be something "more." We talked about it, and realized that what we really wanted was a way to reflect and remember, and we weren't quite sure how to go about doing so.

Poetry Analysis Activity for Mother to Son by Langston Hughes
This is a fun little project that takes about a day to complete. The poem is jumbled up and students cut them out and use the clues provided to put it in the right order. I usually give them the first one and have them organize the rest.
This project works in a group or as an individual. Once they finish putting it in the right order they answer the rest of the analysis questions.

Poetic Device Scavenger Hunt
Distribute some poems and have students identify and highlight poetic devices like similes, metaphors, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and imagery. Discuss what these are and the overall impact on the reader's experience.
Poetry Analysis Jigsaw
Divide students into small groups, assigning each group a different poem. Have each group analyze the assigned poem's themes, tone, and literary devices, and present their findings to the class.
Poetry Slam or Performance
Organize a poetry slam where students can perform poems they’ve written themselves or those written by famous poets. This will help build confidence and strengthen their public speaking skills.
Writing Poetry from Different Perspectives
