Exercise Science Unit 5: Biomechanics

Students examine the changes of the human body that are associated with sports, exercise and nutrition. The course is designed to provide students with a scientific basis for understanding “fitness” — especially why it varies between individuals, and how one can improve their own fitness. Students will have opportunities to explore concepts through hands-on activities and labs.Unit 5 Biomechanics covers the Laws of Force and Class Levers. Students will participate in labs. This unit includes lab

STEAM Classroom
This lab is editable and includes a teacher lesson plan with connections to NGSS. The lab will give students the opportunity to work with energy, work, and power equations and calculate their power from moving up a set of bleachers. Students have a lot of fun with this lab and some of the athletes especially enjoy competing to have the most power. This could be used in a Physical Education class for cross cutting content, as well as any Physics or Physical Science classroom.

This investigation allows students to measure their heart rates after different physical activities. It will allow them to see that the more vigorous the activity, they higher their heart rate will climb. It also allows areas for reflection and can be used for further learning throughout the year. This is a great activity to begin a fitness unit or to even start at the beginning of the year. A great cross curricular approach as well, incorporating math and the need for addition and multipli

Glo Germ Lab Report: Health Labs: Studying the Spread of Germs

The following product is a lab I use for my junior high health classes. You can also do the lab with high school if they have never done it before (they will still enjoy it : ). The only supplies you need are glo germ liquid and a UV flashlight. I ordered mine through frey scientific. I wish I had ordered the powder. Before beginning this lab I show the following youtube video. You can also assign this video through Edpuzzle. Edpuzzle allows you to give students a YouTube video with questions em

Pre-Test Screening Lab- Google Docs

This three page lab is designed to introduce students to screening exams used in the exercise industry prior to designing a client exercise program. Students will examine the important information that determines whether clients can begin a new exercise regiment or whether they should see their doctor prior to beginning. Students can demonstrate assessment skills such as measuring heart rate, measuring blood pressure, and taking the PAR-Q+.

Reflexes & Senses Lab Class

This laboratory is designed to help students develop their understanding of reflexes and sensory perception. It's a hands-on experience where students get to understand how our body responds quickly to various stimuli without us even thinking about it. They explore the concept of the 'reflex arc,' a neural pathway that makes these rapid responses possible. In the lab, students test different reflexes, like the knee-jerk reflex and achilles reflex. They measure how fast their body reacts when thei

This unit is designed to help students discover and understand their personal heart rate zones. Students will learn the difference between their Resting, Fat burning, Aerobic, Anaerobic, and VO2 Max heart rate. Through this unit, students will individually administer four different fitness tests in order to discover their VO2 max heart rate.By gathering this information about their VO2 max they will be able to then discover what their personal fitness heart training zones are.

Posture Assessment Lab

This lab allows students to learn about labs. It has them analyze posture of a partner with a plumb line from the anterior, lateral, and posterior view. The students then explore what their findings mean. There is space at the end for an essay to reflect.TIP: I usually do a vocabulary "pre-lab" where students locate anatomical locations that we haven't gone over yet. This helps when going through the check list.

Moldy Mess Lab: Health: Studying the Spread of Germs

The following product is a document I have used with junior high health as well as high school health (if they have not done the lab already). The only things the class needs for the lab is a loaf of bread and sandwich sized zip lock bags. It is best to get a fresh loaf of bread from a bakery because it will grow mold in a few days instead of a few weeks. Processed bread has more preservatives causing it to grow mold more slowly. Make sure you keep a few pieces of bread that have not been rubbed
