Science Experiment With Coins

Created by
Sara Dean
This is a simple experiment that uses coins, water and a dropper. Students will estimate how many drops of water can fit on each coin. They then try it and record what happens. There is a color and black & white version for each coin. You can also use this in stations/centers. Fonts from: www.helloliteracy.blogspot.com Clipart from: www.mycutegraphics.com

Skittles Proportion Activity

Students are to be provided a bag of skittles. They are going to use proportions and ratios to determine if there are the same number/ratio of each color in all different sized bags. I had students work in groups of 2 for this activity. Within the activity I broke it up into three different sections; a pre-lab, lab, and post-lab portion. Students make initial guesses/hypothesis, test out their theory, use proportions and ratios to analyze their results and graph data.

Density Lab - Discovering the Densities of Coke and Diet Coke

This laboratory experiment (Discovering and Comparing the Densities of Coke and Diet Coke) is written in the scientific format. Students make hypotheses regarding the densities of coke and diet coke, observe the physical properties, and use mathematical reasoning to discover the reason for the density differences between these two materials. Students are always shocked by the outcome of this experiment. This laboratory write-up can be used in isolation, or can be supplemented with comparison

Have your students roll dice and look at the data. Discuss the theoretical probability of rolling a 1 vs experimental probability. What happens as the same size increase?Students work in groups of 2 or 3 and record their data. You can have everyone tell you their data and type it in, or you can have the students type their data into the shared google sheet. As they type the stats will update live and they have a graph showing them each roll. *Note: If you don't have dice you can use an online di

Measurement Hands-on Activity: No Pattern Sewing

Hands-on learning activities enrich the classroom experience and deepen knowledge. This no-pattern sewing activity takes measurement into the realm of practicality. Allows for independent activity, partner or even group work. A sewing station can be set up and groups or pairs can rotate through the station for classrooms with limited sewing machine access. Personal note: It took me about 3.5 hours with two designated sewing machine operators and one teacher who helped with fabric measurements an

Start the Science class with one (1) square. It's simple, because one square is unambiguous. But then challenge students to take four (4) polygons and arrange them together to make a square shape. A-ha! That's trickier. Like Science, there can be many hypothesis on how they fit together, but the best solution solves the puzzle. If it doesn't work, it's back to square one. This lab activity gets students/student teams to think about the nature of science, and also, to show the importance of being

Here is quick lesson plan idea for teaching the edible parts of plants. I have included a narrative writing prompt on the back to integrate writing and science. The charting meets several CCSS for math and NGSS for science. In addition this is great for challenging and motivating students to add more nutritious plants to their diet or try new foods they might not otherwise. This would make a great collaborative morning meeting plan to share their results and create class charts/data to analyze

This product is to be used with Base-10 cubes. Students will work their way through problem solving how to use the cubes to find the missing numbers in the table. The product has 4 versions- hard/GT, regular, easy, and easy-accommodated. The goal is for students to make their own connection, through investigation, between area, perimeter and volume.
