Data Collecting, Graphing & Analysis of Genetic Trait

This whole class activity offers a great way to practice data collection, graphing and for students to gain a better understanding of what role traits play in genetics. Students will see how traits relate to something they are born with. This is a great way for students to understand how the very being of who they are is because of genetics. This a great way for students to work as a class and be exposed to a variety of physical traits that make up a living organism, them!TEACHER PREP:The teache

This high interest activity for grades 5-9 will grasp their attention and allow students to apply the concepts of a controlled experiment following the scientific method. Students will time different simulated blood viscosities. Don't worry, there is no fake blood to buy just water, corn syrup and food coloring. Within this lab there is a strong math connection to data analysis skills such as mean, median, mode or range as well as line graphs. Therefore this activity is great for science t

STEM (Science): The Disease Unit-Inquiry Based* The Sneeze Experiment

Inquiry based, STEM targeted experiment for students who are learning about combating disease and bacteria. This lesson allows students to use their math and science skills to understand the importance of disease prevention by covering up their nose and mouth when sneezing. You will need to provide balloons and tape for this experiment.* My fourth graders went through a disease unit last year in our STEM lab, and they loved this project. Happy experimenting!

HALF-LIFE SIMULTION

Jo Ann Merrell
Most people think of half-life in terms of radioaictve decay. However, it can also refer to drug interactions, pesticides in plants and a plasma half-‐life which is a stability factor. In each case the mathematical equations are similar and produce the typical half-life curve. Using M&Ms to create a simulation of the half-‐life process students create a graph with an exponential curve.
