This is a hands-on activity I have my students do after introducing right triangle trigonometry (SOH CAH TOA). As motivation we discuss applications of trig such as forestry! I have a set of clinometers and 15 meter measuring tapes, but students can actually make their own clinometers with string and protractors! We do the two examples together in class, and then I have student practice using the clinometers. Then, they can go outside and take measurements of trees, buildings, flag poles, etc.

I gave this project to both geometry and PreCalculus students. I gave them specific directions (included) on how to make a clinometer, but taught them nothing else about how to use them. This twist on the traditional Balsa Wood Suspension Bridge, is a long-term project for either an individual or a team to complete. It successfully meets half the standards of a semester of Geometry and Physics. From researching the methods of building a bridge and the physics of wave resonance and frequencies, students design and develop their own suspension bridges, made primarily of balsa wood, to hold (by dangling) as large amount of weight as possible.
