When I found myself writing the same comments time after time, I created this rubric, which sped up my grading time considerably. I also have students use it to assess each other's work, which has greatly improved their own annotations. Students find it helpful and easy to use.
This rubric assesses color-marking, annotating, and short answer responses. Each category is worth 5 points, so an overall score of 15 is possible. I use it on poetry annotations and close reading annotations.

Map Making Project: from Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad
This project requires students to create their own map of the journey Tubman and the 11 fugitives made from Maryland to Canada in December, 1851. The journey is described in Ann Petry's biography, Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad. I do have this section of the text listed as During Reading if interested. RACE into Writing using Text Evidence!

I worked on this rubric for years, tweaking the points and categories until it was just right. Firstly, this rubric is helpful because gives more weight things that are more important: how well the writer synthesized various information with their own analysis, how well they used MLA format, and what quality of information did they find. Students debate this quote based on their World War II knowledge and knowledge of the Anne Frank play (which we read in class).
