Character Selfies: Character Analysis, Summary, Point of View, and Visualization
Do your students have a cell phone? If they do, chances are they take "selfies" (photos of themselves) all the time. Turn this favorite pastime into an activity that will strengthen their comprehension skills! Not to mention, you will be one cool teacher for these 21st century kids!
Examples of when to take character selfies:
Guided reading
Literature circles
Independent reading response
Response to a class read aloud
In this activity, students draw from the point of view of the character.

General Timeline Template
This general timeline template can be used for biography studies, to track important historical events (such as civil rights movement) or something simple as classroom birthdays. The squares can be used to paste/draw pictures or for a written description (whichever is needed to differentiate for your diverse learners and levels). Blackout Poetry
Author, poet and creative Austin Kleon has an unusual approach to words, he blacks out words in an existing text to create poetry. It's really quite amazing. It's also a different way to approach main idea and supporting details. I recommend incorporating a combination of fiction and academic passages. After putting this together, I sent him a copy of the lesson plan and he gave his blessings to share this process with the world.

Book Snaps: Reading Activity for Any Work + Classroom Decor
