Paired passages, or paired texts, meet the demand for more rigorous, complex texts with Common Core- especially these passages that students can use to compare and build knowledge to integrate information and draw conclusions. The passages in this set are in the “stretch” range for 2nd grade. They are leveled for third grade readability. For this reason, I would not recommend giving these as independent reading in second grade. They work well in whole group or small group close reading and annot

Hats Off to Dr. Seuss (Dr. Seuss Research)

In this document, there are two "Dr. Seuss" hats. I used the first hat as one that the students could color and then use as a cover page for the second hat. The second hat provides space for the students to write information about Dr. Seuss as well as their favorite quote and Dr. Seuss book. We plan to make a bulletin board out of this that is "Hats Off to Dr. Seuss". I am providing my students with an All About Dr. Seuss page (from www.seussville.com) for them to use to complete their research

nonfiction form to find text features & improve nonfiction comprehension skills

I use this form with my first graders to help them really "dig" into nonfiction books. I usually do a mini lesson using a big book and this form up on the smart board to fill out as a class. I then have students(that are ready) practice filling this out with nonfiction books during my small group lesson with them. Then I will make this independent work for those who are ready. This could easily be modified for use all the way up to 5th grade.
