The purpose of the Quadrilateral Kite Experiment is to allow students to explore the characteristics of a quadratic kite and use those properties for flight. Students will construct a kite using wooden dowels, a plastic bag, and some string. They will conduct an experimental flight, recording their data and results. Students will then reflect on their results and the qualities of a quadratic kite that make it the choice shape for flight. They will then examine the results of others. Students wi

Introduction to Visualizing & Graphing Sine & Cosine Using Pretzels Exploration

Help students make connections while introducing the graphs of sine and cosine using mini pretzel sticks or equivalent manipulatives. Within this lesson, students will be able to interact with both the sine and cosine graphs using manipulatives such as string and pretzel sticks as they form a tactile graph in groups or individually. A thorough instruction sheet is provided to ensure all students are equipped to create their own pretzel graph. You can also substitute spaghetti, straws toothpicks

Trig Pinwheels- Sinusoidal Modeling

In this project, students will make their own pinwheels (instructions included) to graph and write the sinusoidal model for the motion around them. This is a great way for them to have some arts and crafts fun, while still practicing or demonstrating their skills. It can be used as a practice/reinforcement activity, or as a differentiated assessment instead of a traditional pen and paper test. They will also use right triangle Trigonometry (Soh Cah Toa) to calculate the measure of interior angles. This project gives them a chance to create using Math, and to decorate their spiral in whatever way they choose. I often use this project before exams, allowing them to compete for bonus points. The spirals are easy to grade, and fun for the kids.

This is one of my favorite projects of all time. Students make a tool to measure the angle of elevation from their eyeline and use it to measure the distance or height of things using trigonometry. I would bring students to the banks of the East River on the Brooklyn side and determine the height of the Chrystler building, or the distance to the Empire State. But you can also determine the height of the basketball hoop, the flagpole or the tallest tree on the school grounds. There are a lot
