Transforming Data Exploration
Brief exploration in which students see how adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing data by constant values affects different summary statistics, with an emphasis on the effects of center and spread (i.e. the center is always affected by the transformation, but only multiplication and division change spread). This small group activity is designed as a formative assessment. Students complete 4 long jumps each and record their lengths. They discuss and analyze the data using the measures of center.
