Geometry Project - Geometry Town

Created by
Judy and Brett
Students will create a town map made of different geometric figures. They will demonstrate their knowledge of parallel and perpendicular lines, acute and obtuse angles, geometric shapes as well as many other geometric concepts through this creative and fun project. This project can be adapted to higher level geometry courses and high school classes. You can add parameters to the geometric shaped buildings (ex. must label the dimensions of the building given a certain area or perimeter).

Shape People

What shape would you be? Write about why and create your own shape person. This activity goes great with geometry units and books like The Greedy Triangle by Marilyn Burns. This document is ready to print and copy directly onto construction paper or card stock to make tracers.

Project and Rubric - Real World Math (The Pythagorean Theorem)

"In math class, you have learned about the Pythagorean Theorem. You have also seen examples of how the Pythagorean Theorem is used in ‘real life.’ For this task you will create your own “real life” Pythagorean Theorem word problem and model using the following steps..." Students will create and solve their own word problem, construct a 3D model of their scenario, and then write a reflection on their process and experience. *Rubric is included. *This project was created in collaboration with c

A Culminating 2D Shape Project

This is a fun and engaging way to end a unit on 2 Dimensional shapes. Your students will have the opportunity to create something using 2 D shapes, write how many of each shape they used, graph the amount, and then write an informational piece about what they created. Also included in this resource is an exit ticket which allows the students to show what they have learned about the 2 Dimensional shapes (square, circle, rectangle, triangle, and hexagon). The students are asked to identify how

This is a card sorting activity in which students match terms, diagrams and definitions of lines, rays, parallel and intersecting lines, angles and triangle vocabulary. This activity has also been used successfully as an assessment tool with students in grades 5 through 8, either individually or as a cooperative group project. The resulting poster also makes a good bulletin board display. Delia Benn.

These are posters of 4th grade math concepts. Of the 42 colorful pages, most are geometry terms. Others include mode, median, range, number sense (greater than, less than, prime, composite), and steps to a word problem. In my classroom, I have a large blank wall above the chalkboard, so I call it my "wall of math". Very helpful for standardized testing!

Transformations Project Translations Reflections Rotations Dilations

Help students learn transformation rules through this engaging activity that requires higher level thinking. Students use the transformation rules to create an underwater theme on graph paper. Don't like the Little Mermaid? Change the directions to have students create a Halloween theme, zoo theme, etc. The steps for completion remain the same. I've tried several different themes and all work great! Students will demonstrate their understanding of translations, rotations, reflections and d

This project is designed to be used after studying similarity. Students are required to choose a logo model it with a simpler shape, and scale it to fit a small object, medium object and large object. Further they are asked to research the costs relating to actually making the object based on the area of the logo. A rubric is included.

This project integrates the arts with symmetry and congruent shapes in a rigorous and relevant way. This can be done as a homework project or in class. There are 2 versions included (I updated the original to be more Common Core focused). The task includes artistic practice with line of symmetry, parallel lines, perpendicular lines and real life examples of symmetry. This works well with 3rd-5th graders.

Measuring Angles is EEEasy!

A quick mnemonic for measuring angles with a protractor - Extend the rays, Estimate the answer (above or below 90 degrees) and now it's Easy to determine which number on the protractor to choose. Common Core Math standards require students to know and measure angles - but it is always confusing on how to do it easily and how to pick between the two numbers on the protractor. This can be used as a page in a math journal or projected to use as an anchor chart. Could also be sent home for parent
