I found that students lacked a true understanding of the institutionalized racism and social/political/economic challenges African Americans faced in the 100 years between the end of slavery and the first breakthroughs of the Civil Rights Movement. To provide more context, I created this assignment explaining sharecropping, the KKK, Jim Crow Laws, Poll Taxes, Literacy Tests, and Grandfather Clauses. It is very informative and great for class discussion afterwards and linking to modern times.
