Candy Probability: Discovery of EXPERIMENTAL vs. THEORETICAL Probability

Middle Schoolers LOVE probability! This is a GREAT lesson around Halloween when the kids are already hyped up on sugar and want to 'talk' to their classmates. This activity allows the students to DISCOVER the differences between EXPERIMENTAL and THEORETICAL probability and connect it to everyday experiences. The probability lesson lends itself to fractions, decimals, percents, data collection, rational & irrational numbers, statistical graphs (box and whiskers, frequency tables...), measu

Use the setting of the video game Minecraft to explore Earth Science. Student are engaged by imagining a cavern full of molten rock exists underground. When the magma cools off, what igneous rock types will be formed over time? And for extra credit find out how much gold ore will exist, and if it's worth risking the monsters for the mining! Students solve this real-world math problem with paper and pencil by using the silica content percentage, as minerals will crystallize out of the melt. Stud

This activity requires students to flip a coin 100 times and calculate the cumulative probability for each trial of ten. Students should begin to develop the concept of theoretical versus experimental probability as the cumulative number of flips increases. Recognizing independent events, graphing scatter plots, and calculating percentages are skills students will practice during this activity. Teachers may use this activity as an introductory lesson for a unit on probability, in a statistics

8th grade Task Rotation for Fractions and Volume

This is a task rotation for my intro chapter to 8th grade math. I do a combination of fractions and geometry formulas. Give each station roughly 10 minutes to work on each problem. For station 3 it might help to pre tape the two cylinders to cut down on that time for students and to give them more time to work.
