How to do a close read of informational texts
The new standards ask students to read critically, make inferences and cite evidence to support their conclusions and opinions. In order to do this, students must be able to use metacognitive awareness to think while reading.
This skill can be challenging for a teacher to teach. One way is to teach students how to use the close reading strategy, which draws attention to most important ideas and asks them to question, comment and reflect on the text.
