Building Blocks Handout for Five Paragraph Essay Writing
This handout lays out the Building Blocks of 5 Paragraph Essay Writing. There is a block for each paragraph, and inside each block are the details that should be included in that particular paragraph of the essay.
For example, the first block is titled: Paragraph #1: Introduction. It notes that the introduction should include an attention grabbing sentence, background information on the topic and the thesis statement. The second block discusses the first body paragraph and so on.

I have taken a creative approach in dealing with this by integrating the topic into a creative writing assignment that satisfies the common core standard of argumentative/persuasive writing. Included is a fun "Wreck it Ralph" writing paper for final drafts.

I use this essay prompt to familiarize my students with the informational essay structure. The unit is great as a starter because it doesn't require any research. There are lessons to teach and also a template for students to complete their work. Transisiton Sentence Bridge-Narrative
I was having a great deal of difficulty teaching my kids how to use transitions to craft their writing. After giving a lot of thought., I came up with a way for them to practice using the transitions and help them learn revise/edit strategies for the STAAR test at the same time. They enjoyed doing this and I saw some lightbulbs go off after we did it a few times.

Persuasive Strategies FRIES exercise
This half sheet exercise challenges students to find the persuasive strategies used in a persuasive paragraph (FRIES: Facts, Reasons, Illustrations, Examples, and Statistics) and underline them in different colors. Then, students are challenged to write their own persuasive paragraph using FRIES. This activity was originally used in 7th grade language arts to review persuasive stratigies, but would be great for any middle grades class learning persuasive stratigies.
