Burger Up! Creating Your Own Burger Business

I developed this activity originally for my Career Internship Students to better help them for the workforce, although the activity will easily work with elementary -to- High School students. Students create their own burger restaurant, complete with the restaurant's name, logo, menu, specialty burger, rating scale, and more! I found having students first reflect on their own experiences eating out helped. What hamburger restaurants do they enjoy most? (And the least!) Why? This will help st

Capacity: Customary and Metric Mini Labs

These mini labs were created out of the need to teach customary and metric units of capacity in an investigative setting. Each lab was assigned to half the class for the first day and then flip flopped for the second day. By using a hands-on approach, students in my class understood how much each measure actually contains. They walked away from the investigations with a mental image that made this type of learning concrete. Remember that you cannot teach size with paper and pencil! The lab uses

This is a meal planning guide that incorporates the 5 basic food groups. Students will use a cookbook to decide on the main course of the meal, and from there will add on side dishes to help balance the food groups presented in the meal. Students will then make a shopping list of the needed materials. If applicable, they can shop for the food items at the store, working to find the total cost of purchase, use the "dollar up" method to pay, and calculate the amount of change they should get back.

If they are incorrect, they do n

Family Vacation! Time Management / Organization

This time management exercise assists students with study / organization skills as well as time related math and critical thinking. Prepare your kiddos to manage their time well and set them up for a successful school (and career!) future. For my students who qualify for special education under study / org, this exercise is great for demonstrating the importance of sequencing their use of time.
