Cost vs. Benefits of a Hybrid Car
I used this to help explain cost vs benefits for the environmental issues portion of 6th grade science. Students will research the cost of a hybrid car and it's gasoline model using the Internet. They will then calculate the cost of gas for each car over a 5 year period of time. The students will then see if the cost of a hybrid car is worth the larger sticker price. This is a project that lasts as long as you want it to... I usually give my students a good 2 weeks of math period time (or extra time) to complete their business idea. This does also require a teacher or someone to "shop" at their businesses when they are ready. Then, on the last day, students get to "shop" at each others' businesses.
