Properties of Water Inquiry Lab: Find the Antidote to a Wasp Sting - NGSS

Created by
Next Gen Sci Guy
Aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards, this lab requires students to discover the antidote to a venomous hornet sting. Students must work cooperatively under a time constraint in order to discover which of two liquids are the antidote. They design, and carry out, four mini-experiments using household materials, and their knowledge of the properties of water, in order to ascertain the antidote. They must justify their claim for which liquid is the antidote using evidence from thei

Chemistry Lab: Endothermic and Exothermic Reactions

Created by
Carey Munoz
This lab is completed with simple materials -- the only supplies you need are beaker, vinegar, baking soda, steel wool, and a thermometer. Students will complete a lab objective and review some vocabulary. Then, they will make a prediction, test their prediction with a short experiment, write data and conclude whether the reaction is endothermic or exothermic. Two reactions will be performed. This is a classic lab that is both student-friendly and teacher-friendly.

This lab usually takes about 45 minutes including the post-lab calculations. You will need vinegar, baking soda, test tubes and balloons. The handout is formatted so it can be folded like a book and glued in students notebooks. I've done this with my "on-level" 10th grade chemistry class for several years and it works well.Follow me on Twitter @DenmanChem to see more from my chemistry class.

This is an introduction to matter activity that I do with all levels of general science and chemistry classes that I have taught. There are various "Oobleck" or slime recipes available all around the internet - the one in this activity is close to slightly more fluid than Silly Putty and uses a Borax solution to bind the polymers in Elmer's Glue so that it will stick to itself. The activity involves no math and is purely qualitative observation-based. I have some pre-lab questions for the stu
