Using Periodic Trends to Predict Drug Effectiveness

Students will be given a scenario where a scientist is attempting to develop a medication for a brain disorder. The scientist has developed a few different drugs. There were several chemicals that would be effective but the size of the chemical is a factor. In order to actually be effective the chemical needs to be small enough to fit through the blood brain barrier (BBB). The students’ task is to determine the effectiveness of the scientists’ proposed drugs. The students will work in groups of

When students learn about biomolecules, they often have difficulty remembering all of the different types. Carbohydrates are especially difficult for them because there are so many different types of carbohydrates. This activity cover the basic concepts students need to know about carbohydrates for an introductory Biology class. They could also use them in subsequent biology classes and nutrition related courses. This is a traditional game of concentration (memory) that is used to help reinf

Solid? Liquid? What Physics?

In this lab, students create oobleck, everyone's favorite non-Newtonian fluid. They answer questions regarding solids and liquids as they go, and about the mixture as if forms. In the end, they are asked to write their own definition of the mixture based on their observations. This is fun for any age, but the inquiry is an added bonus for higher levels! *disclaimer: the measurements will change for cornstarch and water. I always add a little bit of each and add cornstarch as necessary.
