Sharecropping and Reconstruction Primary Source Analysis Activity
In this Sharecropping and Reconstruction primary source activity, students analyze a sharecropping contract that was offered during Reconstruction and examine the unfair clauses to showcase just how unfair life was for sharecroppers. Students can work individually or in teams to dissect the sharecropper contract, but the overall goal is the same, to showcase just how unfair these contracts were for the freedmen. Once finished, students produce a short writing piece to explain what they believe

This activity centers around contrasting documents from the lawyers in the Scopes Trial. Students are required to analyze the documents and illustrate the clash in values and ultimately develop arguments about fundamentalism and modernity through a Write Around activity. This student-centered activity enages students and creates a way for them to work together and be creative while tackling these very important issues of the 1920s.
