Tikkun Olam

In Judaism a very important tradition is called “Tikkun Olam,” which means “repairing the world.” This song was written for my 2009 fourth-grade class. Not only did they perform it in both Hebrew and English, they also created an amazing boom-whacker accompaniment. Contact me if you are interested in learning how to play this song with boom-whackers. And solicit ideas from the students of other ways that we/they can help change the world!

We're Gonna Build A Better World

This song was written originally for the National Library Summer Reading Club Theme of 2017, “Building A Better World”, this is the tune to an old union song that I grew up singing, “We’re Gonna Roll the Union On.” There are so many ways to help build a better world, so you can add your own ideas to this song! Have the children add hand gestures for each of the verses, and have them think of new ways to help build a better world.

What Is A Hero?

We often think that only super-heroes can be heroes, but being a hero takes lots of different forms. Some heroes are big and flashy and make it into the TV news, but sometimes being a hero is as simple as smiling kindly at someone on the street who might be looking sad. Use this as a discussion starter for what are the different characteristics of real-life heroes, and what are ways that children can be heroes.

Most people know this song of course as “He’s got the whole world.” By changing the pronoun students immediately understand that there are things that they can influence and change in the world. A wonderful exercise to use as a tool for classroom culture and community building. Solicit ideas from the students of the ways that we/they can help create a compassionate classroom.

Try, Try Again

This song is based on a poem of the same name, written by William Edward Hickson, 1803-1870. Apparently at one time students were required to memorize this poem in order to graduate from school. You can read the original poem here: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Try,_Try_Again.I changed it a little to make it fit into the music, and added a chorus. I think it is one of the most important things to learn. A great discussion starter for students regarding resilience and handling set-backs.

Farmer Brown

Based on the book “Who Took The Farmer’s Hat?” by Joan L. Nodset, this story has so many levels of kindness! I use this with puppets as an excellent lesson for children about how we all see things differently, and that doesn't actually make someone else wrong. Sometimes we don’t have to correct someone when they make what we think is a mistake…The children can guess what each animal is going to use the hat as...

At that point, find a partner, hold their hand and dance together until the end of the phras
