This is a fantastic tool for helping students to edit their own sentences. Teach students to draw each piece of the face after they have checked their sentence for that feature. For beginning students, I stop at the finger spaces part and then gradually introduce the last three parts. This resource is available in 2 fonts, with and without picture prompts. On Demand Free Writing Assessment - Easy Grade Opinion Writing Prompt

By far one of the biggest “difference makers” for me as a “teacher of writers” has been my use of demand prompts to guide instruction. In our class, we have a balance of free writing, process writing, and demand writing—but for me, the most effective way to ASSESS students is to do a regular demand prompt to see how students are doing on the targets we have worked on all year. Process writing is critical in the classroom, but as students work together, confer, share, revise, and so on—it becomes

In my writing class, we use this in our 3rd phase of the writing process: Editing. Our first stage is Rought Draft, then "Revision" where we add, cut, elaborate, add descriptive words. Then comes editing. In each phase I tell the students to only focus on what their specific job/task is at that point in time. When editing, we use the C.U.P.S strategy which allows the kids to focus on 4 major categories of editing - Capitalization, Understanding, Punctuation, and Spelling. When editing, I tel

I found as I was teaching I needed a general rubric to grade writing across all subject areas. I use this tool when I just want to focus on the mechanics that are expected in fourth grade. I just print one of this and circle or highlight the points earned. I do often circle the line between the 5 and 3 or 3 and 1 to signal a middle value. The four areas assessed on this rubric are sentences, grammar, puncuation/capitalization, and spelling. I didn't make this file in color or with shading s

This is a rubric I created for my first grade class to use as a checklist before they turn in work to me. It is not something they must fill out every time they write, but more of a checklist that they review before turning work in. They keep this sheet in their binder so that they can review it when they do their homework as well. It has multiple components, but I have found that their handwriting has improved dramatically because they know exactly what I am looking for and are now more purpose

Find Grammar resources | TPT

Learn more about grammar resources

Grammar is the study of the rules and structures that govern language. It encompasses a multitude of elements, including parts of speech, sentence structure, vocabulary, punctuation, and much more. With a strong grasp of grammar, students can make their writing stronger, clearer, and more effective.

Initially, students will learn about the parts of speech, like nouns, verbs, and adjectives. As they progress in their learning, they’ll explore things like irregular verbs and how to construct intricate sentences, phrases, and clauses.

If you’re a teacher or parent looking for printable and digital resources to help your student learn grammar, but you’re not sure where to start, TPT has got you covered. We’ve got a comprehensive collection of grammar resources, created by other teachers, that are designed to help with any need across grade levels — whether you're teaching grammar to 2nd graders or 11th graders. With plenty of TPT resources at your fingertips, you can make a grammar expert out of your students in no time.

Fun and engaging grammar activities to try

You can teach grammar effectively and engage your students at the same time, with a variety of activities and techniques that cater to different learning styles and preferences. Here are a few examples of the different types of activities that you can find on TPT to help teach students about key grammatical concepts.

Sentence Diagramming & Building

Help students see the relationships between words, phrases, and clauses by having them break down sentences into visual diagrams. Or, help them understand sentence structure by giving them a set of words or phrases and having them construct grammatically correct sentences.

Grammar Word Search

Use word search puzzles to have students locate words that relate to a specific grammar concept (for example, you could have students search for adjectives).

Grammar Bingo

This is a great way to engage the whole class and reinforce a grammar concept your students are learning. Simply call out various grammar rules, sentence examples, or parts of speech, and have students mark the corresponding grammar rule (or error!).

Escape Rooms

Using an escape room-style activity, students can solve grammar puzzles to "escape" within a given time limit. They’re also great for providing children with the opportunity to showcase everything they've learned with a competitive element.

Grammar Quizzes

Regular quizzes can reinforce learning, test students’ mastery of grammar, and help track their progress over time.

These (and other!) activities can help deepen your students’ appreciation for grammar and enhance their creative writing skills.
