Conservation of Energy in a Rotating Rotor Lab (AP Level Rotational Motion)
In this investigation on rotational motion students will measure the time of fall of a hook mass that spins a PVC "T" rotor with weighted arms. This is very similar to an often-used lab in physics AP 1, where a falling mass spins a PVC rotor with weights in the arms. Students will use linear and rotational velocity measurements to calculate the center of mass (from moment of inertia) of one of the rotor's arms. I do not use this in first-year physics. Students will need to create a model to explain a puzzling phenomena about objects on earth and gravitational pull. This is an excellent formative assessment to use at the end of the Forces and Motion! Micro:bit light meter data collector for science projects
The goal of the project is to create a light meter to register light values from two different sources at a time. The meter allows us to quantify the brightness of a source. This activity has students compare and contrast the GFS, Canadian, and Euro computer weather models for 5 days. The students then create their own forecast based upon interpreting weather maps.
