The Cay was written by Theodore Taylor in 1969. Taylor said that it took him only three weeks to write, because he had been thinking about the story he wanted to craft for over a decade. The book is dedicated to Martin Luther King, Jr. Taylor had heard the account of a boy who was aboard the S.S. Hato during World War II and was washed away at sea.
