The Cay Novel Study: MLK's Dream, World War 2, Survival
- Zip
Description
The Cay was written by Theodore Taylor in 1969. Taylor said that it took him only three weeks to write, because he had been thinking about the story he wanted to craft for over a decade. The book is dedicated to Martin Luther King, Jr.
Taylor had heard the account of a boy who was aboard the S.S. Hato during World War II and was washed away at sea. We are not sure what happened to that boy, but the tale that is told in The Cay is certainly a similarly gripping story with a strong lesson.
In addition to the guided reading and discussion notes, you receive with your purchase:
- EXTRAS for each chapter, with factual information about elements in the story such as sea creatures, World War II events, physical injuries the two characters have, hurricanes, malaria, superstitions, links to recordings of Caribbean music, etc. (40 pages)
- A final test with study guide and key.
- Four prompts for essay writing on the story, with writing tips and discussion for teacher guidance.
Today, this novel has been banned in at least one school district because it is seen as objectionable for some children. I advise you to be careful because of this criticism; I can see why it would make some students or parents uncomfortable. Page 1 of the Preview contains a more complete description of the plot of The Cay.
Though it might not have the right approach for your classroom and students, I urge you to read The Cay and consider its value. The lessons are numerous:
- Judgments based on race or looks are wrong.
- A person can be of great worth even if uneducated or poor.
- Self-sacrifice is a great gift to whoever receives it.
- Stay positive and use your resources well in a desperate situation.
- Use the knowledge you have to help yourself and those around you.
