Common Core Close Reading (The High School Annotation Survival Guide)
Close reading a text is an essential skill to teach, especially in a high school English class following a Common Core aligned curriculum. My annotation strategy teaches students to record the gist of each paragraph or chunk of text on the right and talk back to the text using symbols on the left. This is a graphic organizer that I use to teach indirect characterization with this short story. Students look for textual evidence, infer character traits, determine how the author reveals the traits, and try to ascertain character motivations. This is a great during-reading or post-reading activity. I usually give students time to complete the chart and then we fill it in from the Promethean Board as we discuss answers.
