If you try each starting technique on the same subject, then put them all together you may end up with a completed poem of all possible first lines. Here is a youtube video playlist of the workshop. Rather than using the google form (included), students can watch each of these videos with class. Videos should be paused between each clip and discussed together. S

Write the Sequel: The Watertower - Read-Aloud

One of my favourite ways to engage upper primary students in writing is having them write the sequel to a suspenseful read-aloud… and there are few books more suspenseful than The Watertower! After reading, students compose the first page of a sequel, set 10 years after the events of the first book, which devel

Students will watch a poetry video called Antidote by Australian poet Luka Lesson. In his poem, he states how he "rewrites proverbs just to prove the point." For this lesson, students will briefly analyze and openly respond to Luka Lesson's poem. The key activity is for students to model our poet and rewrite proverbs of their own. In other words, students will be writing their own truths. Teacher and students then gather in a circle and share their proverbs at the end of class.

Friday Night Lights TV series is the very best teaching tool I have found in over 25 years of teaching English. The series won multiple awards for excellence. The FNL days our alternative school had the best attendance because students flocked to school to watch and discuss FNL. After viewing the episode I would conduct a discussion/writing assignment of the events/ideas presented. As a writer, don't sell your amazing memory short!

There’s an old saying among writers: Much of what you are writing about is in your head, not in your notes. Too many of us, when we are given the task of gathering information about a place, situation or person—and then boiling that information down into words on paper—are obsessed with taking notes. But what if, after you sit down to write about something, you have no notes--or inadequate notes at best--to refer to? You know that a piece of writing with "thick description" or word pictures
