LEAP! Blends nonsense word game
This game uses blend non-sense words to facilitate decoding skills. Each player draws a card. If they can read the card, they get to keep it. If they draw "LEAP!" they have to return all of their cards to the pile. My first graders LOVE playing non-sense word games every week. It's great for me because they are having fun while learning!

These simple grids allow for repeated practice of short vowel sounds in an initial consonant/short vowel sound/ending consonant format (CVC). As the children search for the sounds that make up words, their decoding of nonsense words is equally important as their phonemic awareness develops.
