Organized Paragraph Writing for Struggling Writers

Created by

I use this with my students with learning disabilities to help them write organized paragraphs. Often they are simply asked to write and don't know how to start or what to include. It keeps them on track and prevents them from rambling or adding unnecessary details.

Stereotyping and bullying have become a major problem in our society. I have taken a creative approach in dealing with this by integrating the topic into a creative writing assignment that satisfies the common core standard of argumentative/persuasive writing. I use numbered clothespins for my students to represent where they are at on the chart. The steps are: Pre-write, Draft, Authors Circle, Revise, Edit, Chief Edit, and Publish. There are notes for each step on each page. This document is editable so you can change the notes to fit to your class.

I was having a great deal of difficulty teaching my kids how to use transitions to craft their writing. After giving a lot of thought., I came up with a way for them to practice using the transitions and help them learn revise/edit strategies for the STAAR test at the same time. They enjoyed doing this and I saw some lightbulbs go off after we did it a few times.
