Sometimes it is so hard to get students to blend. This is the last skill a student needs in order to begin reading. This acitvity has worked really well in my classroom. It has also been used in upper level grades and special education!

This is a comprehensive word wall I created to use in conjunction with my DOLs and lessons in English. It is alphabetical. I placed it on poster board and numbered the backs for easy placement/ removal each year. There are almost 100 words and the font is clear enough to see from any angle in the room.

K.I.M. Vocabulary Graphic Organizer
The K.I.M. Word Cluster Graphic Organizer is an excellent template to increase content area vocabulary for students. It expands understanding of key vocabulary terms and can be used with narrative and expository text. This strategy is very simple and requires a minimum of writing. The template includes spaces to write the key vocabulary word, synonyms related to the key word, the definition of the word, use it in a sentence, and to draw a picture of the word.

Personal Word Wall By Topic
Have kids keep track of new vocabulary by topic. It will be easier for them to retain and organize. Some suggested word walls are character feelings, synonyms for "said," mammals, transportation, & verbs.

WordMarks
WordMarks are bookmarks that students use while they are reading. As students come across words they don't know, they write them down on their WordMarks to be looked up later. A great vocabulary builder, and a great tool for teachers to collect when full to gauge vocabulary learning. I have created spelling and vocabulary lists from collected wordmarks, added words to my Word Walls and turned the words into my "Word of the Day." A great way to personalize learning for your students.
