Do we benefit from slavery today, as the North did in the 1800s?

This is a powerful lesson for students to see a modern connection to the past. Before this lesson, you should discuss with students how the North was complicit in slavery as much as the South was in the years prior to the Civil War. Northerners profited greatly off the backs of slave labor, whether they would have wanted to admit it or not. This lesson poses the question: Do we profit from slavery today? It uses multi-media clips about Nike and Apple as well as a song called "Are My Hands Clean"

I have typed up the lyrics to 3 of the history songs (No More Kings, Shot Heard Round the World and the Preamble) but have removed certain words. My students watch the video once and then fill in the lyrics as we listen a second (and sometimes third) time to the song. I wanted a way for them to interact with the video and get the songs stuck in their heads! It is great as the start to a unit and as a fun wrap up.If you would like all 11 America Rock songs including I'm Just a Bill and Sufferi

I have listed each president with their number, dates of service and their party affiliation. The president's last name is highlighted in red for the ease of identification. After they answer a few questions, they listen to a fun and quirky song which helped re-popularize the battle in the 20th century. I included the lyrics and directions for playing the song. As a final activity which is a lot of fun to do in groups and to share with the class, they write new stanzas for the song that inco
